Maplesoft’s Global Optimization Toolbox Plays Significant Role in Solving a Global Challenge In a paper submitted at the 2006 INFORMS Annual Conference, Larry M. Deschaine presented an approach to solving the challenge of accurately locating and discriminating unexploded ordnance (explosives). He, along with colleagues Frank D. Francone and János D. Pintér, has developed a solution that fuses knowledge from Physics, Genetic Programming and Global Optimization. Maplesoft’s Global Optimization Toolbox is an important part of this solution.

Maple Used to Model Static Electromagnetic Fields of Underwater Pipelines Pipelines can reduce the costs of transporting oil and gas over long distances considerably. However, their presence in the earth’s magnetic field and in a conducting medium such as the earth or ocean generates detectable magnetic and electric fields. Quantifying the strength of these disturbances requires the creation of complicated electromagnetic models. When Defence Research & Development Canada – Atlantic (DRDC Atlantic) was contracted to quantify the magnetic and electric fields created by a long undersea pipeline, there was growing concern that a regular iron pipeline would interfere with equipment near the pipeline and would, hence, need to be replaced.

For the symmetric problem where distance (cost) from city A to city B is the same as from B to A, the number of possible paths to consider is given by (N-1)!/2.
