Virtual Engine Test Bench Variable valve systems improve the efficiency of modern gasoline engines. Testing the engine control units designed for them requires novel, detailed simulation models with high physical resolution. Rapid prototyping systems can be used in such precise simulation environments to test engine control functions in very early stages when no control units are available: another step towards a virtual test bench.

Never Without Power  The electricity an aircraft requires during a flight is normally generated via the engines. To ensure that there will always be a sufficient current supply to the flight controls and essential onboard functions even if the engines fail completely, modern aircraft have a ram air turbine (RAT) – a deployable turbine that generates current via the airstream. RATs have a disadvantage, however: Their output depends on the flight situation. Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenberg GmbH is using dSPACE hardware and software to develop an alternative, fuel-cell-based emergency power system that supplies electricity no matter what the situation is.
Silence is golden Noise pollution impairs the quality of life just as much as any other form of pollution, but noise cannot always be avoided. The algorithms for active exhaust mufflers are known, and their advantages are clear, but to date it is not possible to produce electronic silencers for vehicles, except under ideal conditions. To develop such a vast number of tests efficiently, a systematic approach is vital. HIL Simulation for Mechatronic Automotive Electronic Control Units: Current applications in vehicle dynamics and electric power steering - The current trend in automotive electronics is to use an increasing number of highly integrated mechatronic ECUs. For example, in the latest generation of vehicle dynamics ECUs, the sensor cluster for capturing the acceleration and yaw rate is already integrated. Moreover electric motors with electronic control systems are increasingly used for steering sytems. To run hardware-in-the-loop tests on such systems, the classic HIL simulator requires additional dynamic test benches or components for simulating electrical loads, which in some cases are customer-specific. It is an advantage for end users to obtain an entire turnkey system from a single vendor.
Hardware-in-the-Loop: The Technology for Testing Electronic Controls in Automotive Engineering - Hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HIL) has become an integral component in the electronic development process for testing control functions in the automotive industry. HIL simulation involves operating mechatronic systems, particularly electronic control units (ECUs), in a closed loop with components that are simulated in real time to test them intensively in this virtual environment. This paper provides an introduction to the subject of HIL simulation. First the essential hardware and software components will be presented, including the dynamic models. Then the most important HIL applications will be described, such as the engine, vehicle dynamics, and electric drives. The paper will also take a look at network simulators (testing ECU networks) and some special solutions.
